NNJA RIOT, the musical project of Lisa McKendrick, creates dark electronic avant-pop dance compositions that merge melodic songwriting with spontaneous bursts of noise and performative energy.
Using her songwriting ability and love for melody she likes to create songs which have an avant-pop allure, sequencing beats and rhythms on the Octatrack. Here she uses a blend of her own samples with other external sound sources adding depth and variety to each track. There is a pervasive noise presence in her music as she employs contact mics, springs and other circuit bent toys to create rich textures and energetic sounds. Passionate about DIY electronics, she co-created the Eurorack module Chernobyletta, along with the standalone psychogeographic noise synths Fort Processor and Chernobylizer.
Her visuals are self-made films created in locations she feels uncannily connected to, including the Lake District, Queens Wood, and Epping Forest. In these landscapes, she has captured stone circles and land art inspired by sacred geometry, using natural found objects and often placing herself interacting within the scene.
Her most recent release is “Violet Fields” an album on Cruel Nature Records label.
