3PM

A talk and live listening session on sound as a technology of perception, how sustained listening can dissolve the edges of time, space, and the body itself.
The session will conclude with a live deep listening performance featuring Buchla synthesis and Rob’s live performance system, inviting you to slow down and listen closely.

The session will combine research, reflection, and live sound to explore how immersive sound experiences and intentional listening can alter time perception, shift bodily awareness, and pull attention into unfamiliar states.

Viviana Caro and Rob Parton will introduce their artistic practices and research, both of which explore how immersive listening environments can influence perception, emotion, and states of awareness.
Viviana Caro is a sound artist and PhD researcher at the University of Greenwich. Her work brings together sonic art, neuroscience, and music psychology to explore how sound can shape emotional and perceptual states. Using Buchla synthesis and field recordings, she creates slowly unfolding sound environments that invite attentive listening and shared reflection.
Rob Parton creates immersive sound work under the alias Arconic. His research undertaken during a recently completed MA in Music and Sound explored how spatial sound, repetition, and improvisation can be combined to create meditative listening experiences. Rob’s work draws on minimalism, drone, and ambient music, using sustained tones, looping delays, and field recordings to create evolving sonic environments that unfold gradually over time.
The presentation will introduce ideas around repetition, attentive listening, and the role of improvisation in shaping shared listening experiences.
The session will conclude with a live deep listening performance. Viviana will perform on the Buchla system while Rob performs using his live setup, creating a slow moving listening environment built from tone, texture, and repetition. Together they invite you to slow down, listen closely, and notice how subtle shifts in sound can shape perception in real time.
